Photo Options
- Choose photos: Choose to use your existing
photo folders (if you are signed in and have already uploaded photos) or upload
new photos. If you select automatic layout, your photos will be placed in the order
in which they appear in your photo folder. The first image will be placed on the
cover. (See tips below if using automatic layout.)
- Tip for automatic layout: Photos that you
upload to an existing photo folder will be placed below photos that are already
in that folder. Newly uploaded photos will be ordered alphabetically and then numerically.
If you never renamed your images after transferring them from your camera to your
computer, they are probably still in chronological order. Selecting the automatic
layout option will cause your photos to be placed in this order with the first image
in the folder being used as the cover image, although you can substitute images
later. Any leftover images at the bottom of the folder will not be automatically
placed but will be available to you for placement.
- Tip for automatic layout: If you’ve renamed
your photos prior to uploading and want the automatic quick-build feature to place
them in a particular order, you need to reorder them prior uploading. One way to
do this is to move all the photos you want to use for this project to a separate
folder on your computer. Add a three-digit number prefix to the front of each photo
name, numbering the photos in your desired order beginning with 000 for your cover
photo and 001 for the photo you want placed on the first page. For example, your
cover image might be 000MemorialDay.jpg and be followed by 001IndependenceDay.jpg
and 002LaborDay.jpg. Be sure to use three-digit prefixes even if you are using less
than 100 photos as order will not be retained when 10 photos or more are numbered
with two-digit prefixes.
- Then choose a page background: You can select
one of your own photos to use as a page background or choose one of our background
designs. The outer edges of this background will appear around your photos if you
use the portrait, landscape or panoramic layouts. Backgrounds are not visible with
the full-bleed layout because the photo stretches all the way to page edges. You
will be able to adjust the transparency of your background to give it a faded appearance.
The higher the number, the darker your image will be. At 95, the image will be almost
as dark as the original. At 5, the image will barely be discernible. A frequently
used setting for background images is 70. Your planner will be built with the background
you select here used on every page, but you will still be able to substitute a different
background and adjust background transparency and cropping for individual pages
during the edit/preview stage.
- Layout: The planner builder must start by
building all your photo pages with a single template (layout), even though you can
select other layouts for each page later during the preview/edit stage. This is
where you should click on a single layout that the builder will use for all your
photo pages. Don’t worry if you have a mix of horizontal and vertical photos, because
you will be able to switch layouts for individual pages later. For example, if the
majority of your photos are vertical, we suggest choosing a vertical template and
later selecting the horizontal templates for the horizontal photos during the edit/preview
stage.
- Layout explanations:
- Full bleed: Your photo will be stretched
all the way to page edges with no white space surrounding it. Because a small portion
of your photo will be removed when the paper is trimmed, avoid cropping your photos
with important elements too close to the edges. No caption area or background image.
- Portrait: A vertical photo opening is surrounded
by a white frame around the edges of the page. If you opt to select a background
image, that white frame will be filled with the background image. The black box
in the sample layout shows a caption area where you can enter text if you wish.
- Landscape: A horizontal photo opening is
surrounded by a white frame around the edges of the page. If you opt to select a
background image, that white frame will be filled with the background image. The
black box in the sample layout shows a caption area where you can enter text.
- Panoramic: Like the landscape layout but
with an image opening that is wider horizontally and shorter vertically. Photo opening
is surrounded by a white frame around the edges of the page. If you opt to select
a background image, that white frame will be filled with the background image. The
black box in the sample layout shows a caption area where you can enter text.
- Photo placement: Decide if you want the
planner builder to assemble your planner with your photos already placed for you
or place the photos yourself.
- Automatic: If you select the automatic option,
your photos will be placed in the order in which they appear in your Lifephoto folder.
(See tips below.) The first image in your Lifephoto folder will be used as the cover
photo. You will be able to rearrange photos during the edit/preview stage. Because
the automatic quick-fill feature does not recognize the orientation or size of your
photos, you will need to check each page during the edit/preview stage and possibly
select alternative layouts and rotate or adjust cropping of images.
- Manual: If you select the manual option,
your planner will be assembled with photo pages based on your chosen layout with
empty image openings. You will be able to drag and drop an image from your chosen
photo folder onto each photo page.
- Proceed to the Message Options section.
Do not preview your book until you’ve selected your message options. If you do not
want to add any custom messages to specific dates, you can click the Preview My
Book or Next buttons to build your book and edit individual pages.

Message Options
If you would like, you can add printed reminders to specific dates. You don't need
to add any. These are not the same as captions on photo pages. You will be able
to add photo captions during the edit/preview stage. To add date reminders, select
your date from the drop-down menu. Then type a message, such as "Mom's birthday,"
in the message box. Add your message to the date by clicking the button. To add
more messages, repeat the above steps. All of your messages will appear in your
message list. Check them carefully as the planner builder does not check spelling
or punctuation and we do not reprint products for spelling or punctuation errors
that were printed as ordered.
- Choose text size: If you added custom messages
above, select a point size for the text that those messages will be printed in.
- Choose a font: Select a style for your custom
messages.
- Choose a text color: Select a color for
your custom messages.
- Review your options: Be sure you’ve correctly
selected the options you want to this point.
- Preview your book: If you have no changes
to your options, you can proceed to the edit/preview stage by clicking the Next
button.
